If you are suffering from eczema then you are not alone. Millions of people all over the world also have this awful rash and find it difficult to determine the cause of their irritation. Eczema is the bodies way of responding to an internal threat (or at least what it thinks is a threat) by the immune system and there is more and more evidence that food allergies and intolerances are the cause for many eczema conditions.

The three foods most closely linked to eczema are milk, gluten and yeast products.

Milk, or rather the protein in the milk called casein, has been shown to the cause of eczema in about 3 out of every 4 cases. In fact it is estimated that 75% of the population have a dairy intolerance. While the majority of those are because of the lactose which can cause all sorts of symptoms such as bloating, flatulence and nausea, 3% of people with a dairy intolerance are allergic to casein which causes various skin reactions (such as eczema).

Gluten is usually a problem for about 1 in 7 eczema sufferers. Gluten, which is found in all baked grain foods such as bread, pasta, cereals and oats, usually shows up as digestion problems but can also produce symptoms such as mouth ulcers, poor immunity and skin problems such as dermatitis and eczema.

Finally yeast products are show to be the cause of eczema in around 1 in 3 people. Often those that suffer yeast problems are also prone to candida infections and abdominal bloating. Often times yeast problems can be worse when you are under stress or eat a poor diet since then the body’s own natural balance is disturbed and the candida bacteria starts to multiply.

If you think that your eczema might be caused by a food allergy the best way to determine it, is by eliminating one of the food groups from your diet for a week to see if your symptoms start to clear up. If it hasn’t made a difference then move onto the next food group the following week and see if that improves your symptoms. Keep doing that until you determine if a food group is the cause of your eczema.
