Eczema is a skin condition that affects millions of people all over the world and many people have the problem without knowing its true name. This article will aim to give you some idea of what it looks and feels like so that you can identify it not only on yourself but also your family and then give you some tips on how to help get rid of it for good. So what does eczema look like and how can you tell if you or your family member has it?

In most cases, eczema looks like dry cracked skin with a rough texture that can also be red and inflamed in severe cases. It is also often itchy and irritating. Some people have described the look as a red rash, which of course it is.

It’s usually caused by a reaction to something either internal or external and is your body’s way of letting you know that something isn’t right and the immune system can’t cope with it. Often times it can be caused by irritants in shampoo and cleaning products or certain food allergies. Some of the most likely food culprits are dairy products, yeast and wheat products, and foods containing gluten.

Moisturizing lotions often provide temporary relief but don’t cure the problem. In fact most creams and lotions are usually quite ineffective at curing eczema since they just treat the symptom and not the underlying cause.

The best way to determine what is causing you or your family member’s eczema is to try elimination diets and removing suspect products. Since the most suspect foods are diary, wheat/yeast and gluten products try avoiding them one by one. An elimination diet starts by removing one food group for one week to see if that improves the condition. If there is no change after a week, try the second food group and finally move onto the third. If there is still no change it’s likely that an external factor is causing the eczema.

Start by removing all cleaning products/shampoos/cosmetics or anything artificial that comes into contact with your skin. Picking up some books on natural cleaning products using vinegar or lemon juice is often a good idea, as is buying certified organic shampoo and cosmetics.
