Eczema – that horrible red itchy rash that shows up somewhere on your body. But did you know that there are actually five different types of eczema that all affect the skin differently? This article will show you what are the different types of eczema and how you can tell which one that you have.

The most common and well known type is Atopic Dermatitis. It looks like very dry often inflamed skin and is usually very itchy and can show up anywhere on the body. This form of eczema affects around 3% of adults and 10% of babies all over the world. It is thought to be caused by your immune system not functioning correctly. It usually comes and goes and eczema often gets worse those times when your immune system is run down such as when you are stressed or sick.

The next most common form of eczema is Contact Eczema. That’s when you get the rash on certain parts of the body such as your hands if you have been touching something that you have an allergic reaction to. Often people who have contact eczema also suffer from seasonal allergies. The most common culprits for causing this rash are cleaning products (and in particular laundry detergents), cosmetics and even some jewelry.

Seborrheic eczema or seborrheic dermatitis shows up as yellowish scaly patches on the skin usually on the face or scalp. It is also know as cradle cap on babies. This type of eczema usually shows up more when you have some sort of stress in your life or the shampoo you are using is causing a reaction.

Nummular eczema is fairly uncommon and usually only appears on elderly men. It looks like round scaly patches that are inflamed and extremely itchy and often appear on the backs of your legs, arms and buttocks. Most of the time, those people who have had atopic eczema earlier in their lives are more at risk for developing nummular eczema.

Also fairly uncommon is Neurodermatitis which appears after someone has started scratching an area (say because of an insect bite) and then develops into this form of eczema which looks like dry hard scaly patches on the skin usually starting on the area that was originally scratched. Often women between the ages of 20-50 are more prone to neurodermatitis than men. Stress also seems to make the condition worse.

As you can see there are many different types of eczema with the most common being atopic dermatitis and contact eczema.
