Want to know if you have eczema? Typically your skin will look red and sore and you’ll find it’s very itchy. Very often it looks scaly too like when you skin peels from being in the sun too long.

Eczema (pronounced ek-suh-muh) can also be called other names such as atopic dermatitis from the meaning allergic inflamed skin.

If you do have eczema then you are among millions of others around the world, young and old that also has it. It is one of the most common skin conditions known today.

While no-one is really sure why one person will develop it and not another, it is thought that it may be genetic in that if your family is predisposed to allergies such as hay fever or asthma then you are more likely to get it.

Usually eczema flares up in certain conditions such as in dry winter air with no moisture, hot weather if you are sweating a lot and certain irritants such as soaps, detegents, perfumes, dust and pet hair.

So if you do have skin eczema – what can you do about it?

First up – don’t scratch as this makes things worse. Scratching can make your eczema bleed and become infected with bacteria. The best way to deal with the itchiness is to wet a washcloth and apply to the area.

Take lukewarm baths and showers – hot water can make you itchier. A good way to help soothe the skin and stop the itching is to add some oats to the bath water and soak in that for at least 20 minutes.
