If you’ve done a search online for remedies for itchy skin then you might be getting a little concerned, but relax, not all cases of itchy skin is a disease or condition of some kind. In fact it’s more likely that all you have is a mild reaction to an irritant that is likely to clear up on its own.

But if you want to give it a little help and treat it fast then this article will show you some things that you can do right at home.

But before we get to that, you need to make sure not to make the problem any worse and that means not scratching! Yes I know it can be almost unbearable, but scratching might do much more harm than good and inflame the skin further or make it bleed.

So what can you do to relieve the itching?

Firstly you’ll need to moisturise the area. Use a mild lotion or cream that contains no fragrances or extra additives. You’ll find lots of great products at your pharmacy which are specifically created for dry itchy skin.

Calamine lotion is great for relieving any itching, as well as taking a bath in which you have put a handful of oatmeal (the ingredients in the oatmeal help soothe and calm any irritated areas on your body).

Or you can use any natural emollient that you might have at home including ordinary olive oil! Coconut oil is particular beneficial (and also smells great too).

Never be without your moisturiser and apply it often during the day whenever you feel any itching sensations.

Don’t be tempted to use a steroid cream which can actually make the condition worse. These creams are for use for serious skin conditions and should only be used for very short periods of time.

Make sure you also hydrate from the inside out. Many people who suffer from itchy skin (especially in the drier winter months) find that drinking more water can help. Taking a fish oil or flaxseed supplement is also very beneficial.

Of course if your itchy skin continues past 2 weeks or get’s progressively worse, then it’s advisable to visit your doctor or dermatologist to seek further treatment.
