How To Soothe Eczema in Babies
Unfortunately it is much more common to have eczema in babies than for adults. The reason is thought to be that their immune systems are still not yet fully able to deal with life’s irritants and allergens causing a skin reaction – that annoying itching red, and often painful, rash known as eczema.
Fortunately for most children they will grow out of it by the time they reach school age, although a few unlucky individuals will go on to have it their entire lives.
So what can you do today to help soothe your child’s skin from eczema?
Obviously the first step is to not let them come into contact with any known irritants which can include soaps, detergents, cleaning products, dust, pet hair, pollens and certain foods. Of course this is easier said than done – how do you know which it is they are reacting to?
Use only specially formulated mild soaps that are specially formulated for babies sensitive skin. There are many good ranges that are recommended for eczema prone skin included Aveeno and Gentle Naturals.
Keep your babies skin moisturized at all times using a mild formula that contains no fragrance, alcohol or other additives. You can get some ideas of the best cream for eczema here.
If you need to soothe your babies itch then bathe them in some tepid water to which you have added a handful of oatmeal. The oats can relieve itching quickly and the cool water should take away the heat associated with the rash. Afterwards make sure that you pat them gently with a soft towel (don’t rub) to dry them off.
During winter, eczema can be worse due to the harsh wind and drying heating systems that we use. During those months try and avoid any scratchy clothing such as wool which can aggravate your babies skin. Where possible use cotton clothing instead which will also have the added benefit of allowing any affected areas to breathe properly which is better for your child’s skin to heal.

One of the best times to moisturize is immediately after a bath or shower or even after washing hands etc.Take care not to sweat to much, and also not to scratch or rub effected areas to much, could cause infection. Nice article-very informative! Thanks!
