Does your child have eczema and doesn’t seem to be improving? Well let’s look at some eczema treatment for infants so that you can reduce your child’s symptoms and hopefully clear it up altogether.

Eczema in infants can appear on any part of their bodies but usually it is most common on either their face or the their legs. And it always seems to be in places that are really noticeable to other people.

Fortunately most children will grow out of it by the time they are 3 years old but while that might make you feel better, it doesn’t help the situation right now. So what can you do to help clear up their dry extra sensitive skin?

The first thing is to try and get your infant to stop scratching herself. Yes, that’s far easier said than done, especially as most babies don’t understand that they shouldn’t do it, but scratching it will only make it worse.

Next you need to find out what is triggering their eczema. There are many common irritants around the home that might be the culprit (or perhaps it is more than one). These include:

  • Dust
  • Pet hair / Pet dander
  • Detergents
  • Soaps
  • Certain foods: dairy, citrus, wheat, gluten and nuts.

If you are still breastfeeding continue to do so as it is very good at building a strong immune system. Just be wary of the foods that you may be eating that might be causing your child’s rash. If your child is on formula perhaps you might want to try changing from a cow dairy based formula, to a soy or hypo-allergenic formula.

You should avoid situations that is likely to make your infant’s eczema worse such as humid sweaty conditions, scratchy fabrics like wool (cotton is best), washing her clothes in strong detergents (see if your store has a range for sensitive skin) and using soaps in her bath.

Apply a good moisturizer to her skin to keep it hydrated. Good brands for eczema prone skin that are safe for babies include Aveeno, Eucerin, Aquaphor, Curel or even plain old vaseline.

And finally keeping a humidifier in her room at night will help prevent her skin drying out at night.
