Because their skin is so sensitive at such a young age we believe that trying to find the underlying cause and choosing a natural eczema treatment for babies is the best way to go, so this article will go over some of the natural remedies that you can try that many mother’s swear by that has helped cure their baby’s eczema.

What causes Baby Eczema?

You might be wondering what is causing your babies eczema but the truth is no-one really knows what causes eczema.  There is medical evidence that it is inherited however.  Well eczema itself isn’t inherited, but the way the immune system reacts to certain irritants is.  Therefore you might get one member of the family have hay fever, another asthma and another who has eczema.

It’s usually triggered from an allergen which could be external – such as dust, pollen, detergents or chemicals or internal – such as foods and diet.

While doctors have still yet to come up with a definitive answer to what causes eczema it is well known that babies are more susceptible to it because they haven’t yet developed a strong immune system and their skin is thinner than that of an adult.

Therefore any irritants that are known to cause eczema which include both food and external allergens will cause a reaction in many infants.

Usually eczema is aggravated by hot dry conditions – so that means both summer and winter (heating our homes) can make things worse for our babies.

Baby Eczema Treatment’s

Looking at your child’s diet is one of the first things you can look at. You can either get an allergy test done, or keep a food diary yourself. Most people don’t even consider that food would make a difference to their child’s eczema and dismiss it entirely, but it’s been proven that eliminating certain foods can make a dramatic difference to their skin.

Most common food allergies are from cow dairy products, citrus fruits, gluten and/or wheat products, fish, and nuts. Even if your child is not on solid foods, be aware if something you eat is being passed through your breast milk (although it is more likely to happen if they have the food directly).

Make sure you only use soft 100% cotton clothing and bedding. Some fabrics (even natural ones like wool) can scratch and irritate the skin further. Even disposable nappies can cause problems because they don’t allow the skin to breathe.

Keep your home free of dust and pet hair. Pollens can also cause a reaction in some babies.

Obviously you want to avoid creams and lotions that have fragrances and chemicals in them. This includes your washing detergent that you use to wash your babies clothing. There are many natural and good over the counter products that you can use to treat baby eczema that can be budget friendly as well.

If your child has a particularly itchy rash then giving them a cool bath to which you have added either oatmeal (very soothing) OR sea salt (natural antiseptic) can help take the redness and sting away. Don’t use the sea salt if your baby has any open wounds though, as it can sting.
