Eczema on your Eyelids: How to Get Rid of It Safely
While less common that other forms of eczema, eyelid eczema can affect both men and women can be extremely painful due to the delicate and sensitive skin around the eye area. In this post I will go over some of the ways you can not only understand why you may have it, but also different treatments that you can try to get rid of it altogether.
What causes it?
Usually Eyelid eczema is caused by contact with an irritant or allergen of some kind. Most often this is face creams or makeup. Artificial nails have also been known to cause severe reactions on your eyelids. Be aware of anything that you have been applying to this area over the past few weeks to see if you can identify any potential suspects.
Other allergens that can cause your eczema to flare up in the eye area include spicy foods, alcohol, smoke, latex products (cleaning gloves and the like) and of course soaps and detergents. Many times it’s because you have had these items on your hands and inadvertently rubbed your eyes causing the reaction.
Treatment for Eczema on Eyelids
While the treatment for eczema on the skin around your eyes will be the same as treating it on other parts of the body, there is no doubt that you need to be careful not to get any heavy creams or lotions in your eyes. Also certain creams such as the corticosteroids shouldn’t be used near the eye area either as they have been known to thin the skin, and the skin in this area is already thin and delicate.
If you suspect that it might be one of your face creams or makeup items, then obviously your first step would be to discontinue use and avoid using anything in the short term until the situation corrects itself.
Make sure you always wash your hands thoroughly with a mild or eczema safe soap after you have touched anything that could be considered an irritant.
Apply a thin lotion that is specifically recommended for eczema and is safe to use around the eye area.
If your eyelid eczema continues then your doctor might prescribe medicine to help suppress the immune system and clear up the problem – however this is a short term solution only as these drugs can have side effects.
