If you look at pictures of babies in magazines, they are all healthy and glowing with perfect skin, but of course that isn’t the reality for most mothers, especially if their babies have eczema (which is very common in newborns and toddlers). So this article will show you that there is something you can do for eczema in babies. Treatment doesn’t have to be expensive or hard, in fact you can start doing some things right away.

Usually infantile eczema will go away by the time they are around 3 years of age, but until then you’ll probably notice that their rash is dry and scaly and very itchy. Lots of babies want to scratch at it too, but this can make it worse and it may become infected. Try putting soft cotton socks over their hands to prevent scratching.

Bathing can dry out skin very quickly so only wash your baby every other day or only when they really need it. Use mild soap such as Dove, Aveeno or Cetaphil that doesn’t contain fragrances or dyes. This will prevent their skin from losing moisture.

You will need to keep their skin moisturized. Any thick moisturizing cream should work as long as it doesn’t contain unnecessary ingredients. Lots of mothers particularly like the Aquaphor and Eucerin ranges although these can be expensive. Many stores like Walmart often stock generic brands of these as well.

Clothing is also important and the best clothing are organic soft clothing that allow the skin to breath. Good choices are cotton, and more recently bamboo clothing. Organic bamboo clothing is incredibly soft and is better than cotton at drawing moisture away from the body, but it is very new and can be difficult to find. Many eczema sufferers swear by it.

Finally avoid any know irritants around the house including pet hair, dust, pollen and strong detergents (including the one you wash your child’s clothing with).

If your babies eczema doesn’t seem to be clearing up within around two weeks with these simple treatment options then visit your doctor who may give you a low strength hydrocortisone cream. This is only a short term solution however and you should watch your baby carefully for any side effects.
