If you have eczema then there are a number of things that you can do at home to keep your condition under control and help reduce inflammation and keep the itchy’s at bay. This post will help you take care of your eczema.

1. Dump the irritants.

You don’t want anything that could irritate your skin any further and especially if you have atopic eczema you need to throw out or avoid anything that could cause a flare up. These include household cleaners, soaps, detergents, perfumes, solvents and gasoline.

If you must use soap try and get a moisturizing one and make sure you rinse and dry your hands thoroughly afterwards.

2. Wear Gloves

If you are going to be exposed to water or irritants then get a good quality pair of plastic or vinyl gloves (your aim is to have something completely waterproof). If you find that the plastic irritates your hands then you can wear cotton gloves underneath the plastic pair.

3. Cotton is your new best friend

Cotton helps your skin to breathe and get rid of any excess sweat so check your clothing label to make sure you are wearing 100% cotton. Wool or synthetic polyester blends can irritate some skin.

4. Lukewarm water

Warm water does not dry out your skin like hot water can, and it’s much more soothing and gentle. When showering or bathing turn the temperature down a notch and see if that helps. Bathing is actually quite good for your skin as it can absorb water and become less dry. When you get out, gently pat yourself dry with a big soft fluffy towel and apply some moisturizer to help seal in the moisture.

5. Use moisturizer everyday

Moisturizers (both body & face) help keep the skin soft and crack free. Avoid any moisturizers with fragrance or lots of ingredients and get one as plain as you can for the best results. (As an added benefit, plain moisturizers are usually much cheaper).
